KOHIMA: A curfew was imposed in a subdivision of Manipur's Kangpokpi district on Saturday due to rising tensions between the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities. In a separate incident in Kamjong district, a mob dismantled a temporary Assam Rifles camp, officials reported.

Officials in Imphal reported that tension has persisted for the past three days in the Kangchup Geljang sub-division of Kangpokpi, following unrest between residents of the Naga-dominated Konsakhul village and the Kuki-Zo community.

A territorial dispute has sparked tensions between Konsakhul and Leilon Vaiphei villages. While Konsakhul villagers assert that Leilon Vaiphei falls within their territory, the claim has been vehemently rejected by the residents of Leilon Vaiphei.

Amid the ongoing dispute, allegations emerged that a Naga woman was assaulted by a group on January 7. As tensions escalated and minor clashes broke out between the villagers of the two communities, District Magistrate Mahesh Chaudhari imposed an indefinite public curfew in the sub-division.

In a separate incident, a mob in Kamjong district dismantled a temporary Assam Rifles camp on Saturday, reportedly in protest against alleged harassment and restrictions on transporting timber for house construction.

According to police, the unrest began when the Assam Rifles allegedly restricted the transportation of timber meant for building houses in Kasom Khullen village. To control the situation, Assam Rifles personnel used tear gas and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the mob.
