Nagaland Peace Talk To Resume After Christmas: CM Neiphiu Rio

KOHIMA : While attending a programme at Chiephobozou in Kohima, Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland, shared a development regarding the much debated Naga political issue. He stated that, the peace talk is unlikely to happen before Christmas.

The CM informed that all Naga negotiators have returned to the state from New Delhi, to celebrate Christmas. Discussion and talks will be paused till the festive season, added the minister. Furthermore, he made an announcement that, government has notified all the Naga groups and the state administration that government should not be held responsible if the peace talks fail to achieve any sturdy conclusion prior to Nagaland assembly elections.

Neiphiu Rio made their role clear in elections and claimed, they only act as a facilitator in the Naga peace talks. Since 1997 until 2017, the Union government has initiated talks with NSCN-IM and Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups.

Rio stated that, there will be no campaigns by the elected representatives, amidst the festive season. While addressing the 75th anniversary celebration of Peren Township, CM Rio claimed that, despite a peace accord or cooperative settlement, Naga's can never attain peace if they don't act accordingly.

He emphasised on the fact that, people should perceive things beyond narrow tribalism. One has to forgive in order to bring about peace. The minister urged the citizens to act as one. NSCN-IM has been demanding a separate flag and Constitution. This contentious issue has been rejected by the Government of India.

A peaceful agreement was signed with NSCN-IM in 2015 and Agreed position in 2017 with NNPG. NNPG has agreed on solution, however, NSCN-IM has shown no flexibility. It is very much rigid about separate flag and constitution, resulting in delay for a conclusion.
