KOHIMA: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Nagaland Police said that it had seized narcotics and illegal substances worth more than Rs. 118.83 crore in 2024, besides arresting 343 people. The IGP of the Criminal Investigation Department, Vikram Khalete, disclosed the details at a press conference held at the Police Complex in Chümoukedima on Wednesday. A total of 199 cases were registered throughout the year.

During the last two weeks of January 2025, police seized 203 soap cases of heroin valuing at Rs. 8.31 crore and arrested 18 suspects in total, out of whom 14 were men and 4 were women.She stated that between 2023 and January 2025, under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 60 major traffickers have been put on book.

According to IGP, Nagaland is one of the most crucial transit routes for narcotics mainly from Manipur and going into other states such as Assam and Punjab. He also drew attention to the disturbing trend of drug peddlers changing vehicles to hide drugs, making them hard to detect.

Aside from the drug problem, Khalete spoke about the increasing cybercrime and how the public should be very cautious with online frauds, reporting one if they happen to encounter suspicious activities. He said that combating both drug trafficking and cybercrime requires community cooperation, assuring the identity of informants would be protected.
