KOHIMA: In a bid to prevent the lapse of over Rs 500 crore in central funds, the Nagaland government has instructed its departments to accelerate the implementation of key projects. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting at the Chief Minister’s Office, where concerns were raised about delays in project execution leading to the risk of unutilized funds.

The funds, part of a larger Rs 1,200 crore allocation, are designated for critical sectors like Health and Family Welfare, Urban Development, and Rural Development.

However, nearly half of this amount remains unspent due to slow progress in project implementation. A significant hurdle exists in the health sector, particularly with the establishment of wellness centres in rural areas.

Some medical facilities are still operating from rented or private spaces, with the government working to resolve this by collaborating with local village councils and district officers.

Funds are also allocated for upgrading older medical centres into wellness facilities and procuring medical equipment for rural areas. Financial challenges, including salary payments for grassroots workers, have hindered progress, but the government has diverted funds to address these issues.

The Urban Development sector has faced setbacks due to the recent civic body elections, which took place after a two-decade gap. The newly formed Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) are now responsible for completing several long-delayed projects, with the government prioritizing their swift execution.

Additionally, the cabinet approved the long-awaited recognition of Anato village in Niuland district, which had been pending for nearly eight years.
