KOHIMA: Prior to leaving for Dimapur on the final day of her visit to Nagaland, President Droupadi Murmu stopped at the village of Kigwema on Thursday.

Along with other dignitaries, she was escorted by the governor, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, and the chief minister, Neiphiu Rio.

The President met with the village council members, self-help groups (SHGs), and farmers in Kigwema Village Council Hall during her visit.

She went to exhibition booths set up by the SHGs, where Kigwema women showed off their traditional weaving techniques and various agricultural goods.

Neiphiu Rio, the chief minister, thanked the president for visiting Kigwema, a traditional Naga village. She said it was an honour for the community there and hoped she would take fond memories of her time there with her.

With a population of roughly 7,562, the settlement is one of the biggest; during the Second World War, the Japanese established a station there, according to Rio.

The second-highest peak in Nagaland, Mt. Japfu, is located above the village and is a virgin forest with stiff hills, but the settlement has a moderate slope with fertile ground perfect for growing paddy, vegetables and sweets, according to Rio, who claimed that the State capital Kohima has a magnificent landscape.

He continued by saying that the community had preserved this traditional community to this day and hosted the Hornbill Festival in Kisama, which was close to the settlement.

All of the Naga tribes, North East tribal peoples, and neighbouring countries participate in various celebration events during the Hornbill Festival, which runs from December 1 to December 10.

Rio added that the NDA government, which is led by the Prime Minister, has been assisting the State with a number of policies and programmes, most notably MGNREGA, PMJSY - Road activities, and livelihood supports to all the villages in Nagaland, all of which have been extremely beneficial to the villages.

According to Rio, the Kigwema village has been performing well in various programmes and was chosen as the best Village in 2021 under the Upadhyay Panchayat Sashakti Karan Puraskar (DDUPSP). 34 SHGs are present in the hamlet, with a focus on the women residents who have been successful in growing fruits and vegetables.

Balie Kere, the chairman of the Kigwema Village Council, welcomed Droupadi Murmu, the president of India, and his entourage and stated that the village was actively working with both the federal government and the state government on various initiatives and policies, development projects, and agendas.
