Samvidhan Samman Yatra 2018, Reaches Nagaland

Guwahati: A interaction was held between the National Alliance of People’s Movements (NAPM) and the various civil society organisations of Nagaland on Wednesday at Don Bosco Institute for Development and Leadership, Riverbelt colony, Dimapur. The NAPM team visited as a part of their nation-wide Samvidhan Samman Yatra 2018, that started on October 2 from Dandi.

The Yatra is travelling through various States in the country holding meetings, discussions, public events, supporting struggles, sharing the grief of victims of violence and hate and spreading a message of plurality, love and peace. It will culminate at Jan Sansad in Delhi on December 10, the International Human Rights Day. The Yatra focuses on democracy, secularism, diversity, equity and justice and against hate, inequality, violence and loot of resources.

The program in Dimapur was facilitated by Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR).

During the interactive dialogue between various Naga civil society organisations and the 24 NAPM deputation members, the latter highlighted various failures of the government of India. The NAPM members called for unity, beyond the diversity of perspectives, to safeguard constitutional values and principles of humanity, based on social justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, etc. It also called upon the people to create understanding and tolerance in society through peaceful, democratic and constitutional means.

During the interaction, various matters pertaining to the Indo-Naga political issue and relations, geography of the Nagas, etc were also deliberated. Naga civil society organisations’ leaders apprised the NAPM members on this matter. Civil society leaders also expressed resentment alleging discrimination against Nagas by the Indian government. The Naga civil society leaders also told the Yatra members that the Naga lands extend beyond the present state of Nagaland, and touches Burma/Myanmar, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. The civil society leaders also lamented the discrimination against Nagas and people of the North East in the mainland cities. It urged the members to recognise the Naga identity and issues.

One of the women leaders, while sharing her experiences during her college days in the mainland, urged the members to distinguish between terrorists and freedom fighters, saying that freedom fighters have been branded as terrorists by the Government of India.
