'Swarnim Vijay Mashaal' welcomed in Dimapur

KOHIMA: The 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh Victory Flame', which commemorates the 'Golden Jubilee of India's historic victory over Pakistan in the 1971 War, was flagged off from the National War Memorial, New Delhi on December 16, last year. The 'Flame' entered Nagaland and reached the Rangapahar Military Station in Dimapur on Saturday amidst a grand welcome ceremony with full military honours and fanfare.

Earlier during the day, the 'Victory Flame' started in the morning from Jorahat and reached Dimapur in the afternoon. During the move of this 'Victory Mashaal', locals, children and leaders came forward at different locations to pay homage to those who made supreme sacrifice.

The welcome started with the last mile run from Eden Hospital till the Bhagat Stadium in the Rangapahar Military Station. At the Bhagat Stadium, a ceremony was held to welcome the 'Victory Flame'. A large number of civilians, war veterans, veterans, veer naris, civilian dignitaries and school children were present during the event. War veterans and veer naris were honoured during the event.

The Chief guest of the event was Manju Eliyas -- wife of the '1971-War Shaurya Chakra' awardee -- (late) Lt Col Cyril Jonathan Eliyas.

Post the felicitation ceremony, tree plantation was carried out by the Chief Guest and the seniormost officer. In the upcoming days, commemorative events such as wreath-laying ceremony, mini marathon and screening of documentary on the '1971 Bangladesh Liberation War' are scheduled at the Rangapahar Military Station, Dimapur to celebrate the 'Swarnim Vijay Varsh', stated a press release.

The event was instrumental in recalling the invaluable service of veterans and evoking a strong feeling of patriotism especially among the young generation.
