Tribal body Rengma Hoho demands delimitation in Nagaland

Guwahati: At a time when many Naga bodies are opposing the delimitation process before a concrete solution is reached in the ongoing peace process, the Rengma Hoho has welcomed the demarcation process,

Writing to the Chairman of the Delimitation Commission of India, Konyuseng Tep, the President of the tribal body said that the Rengma Hoho has affirmed its stand "that the delimitation exercise which intends to rationalize parliamentary seat and the State Assembly seat is a timely exercise as per the Constitution of India."

Tep further added that any attempt to derail the delimitation issue in the state of Nagaland will be devoid of Constitutional provision and tantamount to the injustice of equality in the re-adjustment of Assembly seats in the state of Nagaland. "Some districts in the state have been enjoying numerous seats under the manipulated 1972 delimitation depriving some communities of assembly seats and the Rengma tribe has been one of them", he added.

"Bowing down before irrational pressure and argument will be a defeat of Indian democracy. The Rengma Hoho would like to appraise the commission and the Indian Government to do the needful in conducting the delimitation in the state of Nagaland upholding constitution", he added.

It may be recalled that the government in March constituted a Delimitation Commission, to be headed by former Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, to redraw Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies of the Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland.
