GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has announced that all passenger trains will revert to their original numbering system starting January 2025. In accordance with the Railway Board’s directive, this change marks a return to pre-COVID operational norms. The existing ‘0’ prefix in train numbers will be removed, simplifying the numbering system for better clarity and passenger convenience.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NFR, stated in a press communiqué on Saturday, “The decision reflects our commitment to streamline passenger services and return to normalcy post-pandemic. All 60 pairs of passenger trains owned by NFR will operate with their original numbers and frequencies from January next year.”
The operations of the 60 pairs of passenger trains under NFR will be distributed across its divisions as follows:
Tinsukia Division: 4 pairs, including Train No. 55909/55910 (Simaluguri Jn. – Dibrugarh – Simaluguri Jn.) and Train No. 75904/75905 (Makum Jn. – Dangari – Makum Jn.).
Lumding Division: 19 pairs, such as Train No. 55603/55604 (Guwahati – Mairabari – Guwahati) and Train No. 55687/55688 (Dullabcherra – Silchar – Dullabcherra).

NFR has advised passengers to check the updated train schedules, including timings and stoppages, on the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or NFR’s official social media platforms before planning their journeys.

With the return to regular train numbers, NFR aims to improve travel planning and ensure operational consistency, benefiting thousands of passengers throughout its network.
