Road connection in the Barak Valley and the neighboring states of Tripura and Mizoram was completely disrupted Wednesday morning when a bridge on the Silchar-Kalain National Highway at Bhangarpar fell at around two in the morning.
Just a month ago, the bridge that crossed the Harang River was once again open to the public after renovations that reportedly cost Rs 1.37 crore. Two trucks carrying stones fell into the river during the collapse, but no one was killed, according to the police.
Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta and Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav hurried to the scene to evaluate the damage after the occurrence. According to SSP Mahatta, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) started rescue efforts right once, and a nearby road was chosen to provide some movement for smaller cars.
After the current structure collapsed, District Commissioner Yadav stated that a Bailey bridge would probably be built to reestablish communication along the Silchar-Kalain National Highway.
As the main Katigorah Gammon Bridge on NH-6 remained blocked for renovations, the Silchar-Kalain road acts as a temporary lifeline. The Barak Valley and neighboring states are now essentially cut off from the rest of Assam and beyond due to the compromise of both routes. Authorities are already attempting to reroute traffic via alternate routes and guarantee the continuation of vital services. However, it is anticipated that the long-term effects on public trust and connectivity would persist.
