Rainfall: Massive Mudslide Blocked Sonapur Tunnel, Meghalaya Police Alert Commuters

After Saturday morning's heavy rain, a large mudslide blocked the road near the Sonapur tunnel. Meghalaya police reported that the NH No. 6 is currently blocked near the tunnel.

GUWAHATI: After Saturday morning's heavy rain, a large mudslide blocked the road near the Sonapur tunnel. Meghalaya police said that the National Highway 6 near the tunnel is currently closed and that work is being done to free it.

The Meghalaya police have warned commuters to be cautious in light of the event.

There has been Mudslide at Sonapur Tunnel on NH06 which occured this morning of 27/05/2023.

The Road near the Tunnel is currently blocked, but efforts are underway to clear the same.

Commuters are advised to be alert .”

It further stated that, “The debris from the Mudslide that occurred at Sonapur Tunnel on NH06 have been cleared and two way traffic movement is now open.

Commuters are however advised not to overtake as this will only delay traffic movement for all.

Stay Safe & Drive Carefully.”

On the other hand, in 2022, Meghalaya experienced torrential downpours, Sonapur Tunnel in the East Jaintia Hills district experienced more landslides.

A significant landslip occurred again after the tunnel was cleared later on.

The district administration has asked commuters not to use this route for any unnecessary trip. The official announced that priority would be given to cars carrying necessities to Barak Valley and neighbouring provinces.

The Northeast and the nation's first-stage rainfall projections for the 2023 southwest monsoon season (June to September) have been released by IMD. Rainfall from the southwest monsoon season is probably going to be average nationwide. It is forecast to be normal for the northeast, central, and southern peninsular regions, but it is below average for the northwest region.

On June 2022, there have been a number of further landslip occurrences brought on by nonstop rain in the East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Khasi Hills areas.

27 people have died last year in Meghalaya due to floods and landslides, according to a report.

Conrad K. Sangma, the state's chief minister, met with the families of those killed in the most landslides while visiting Dagar and Kenmynsaw in the East Khasi Hills' Mawsynram Block.
