Sikkim imposes full lockdown rules until May 3 citing misuse of relaxation by people

GUWAHATI: Sikkim to impose full lockdown rules until May 3 citing misuse of relaxation by people on April 20.

"“People have misused the relaxation given with reports of many chaos like scenarios engulfing hospitals. People were seen sitting and making merry at MG Marg, traffic jams were seen across the NH 10 within the state caapital. The advisory to the relaxation was on the grounds of people collecting essential commodities from shops along with ration, but the same was misused in violation to the national lockdown which is still in place," Chief Secretary S.C. Gupta told media after Cabinet meeting.

Hence, in a meeting Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang along with other ministers and officials have decided that full restrictions will stay in place until May 3 barring movement of essential services. Quite similar to how it was earlier.

Prime Minister Modi urged people to follow lockdown measures until May 3.

“Friends, keeping all the suggestions in mind, it has been decided that the lockdown in India will have to be extended till 3rd May. That means until 3rd May, each and every one of us, will have to remain in the lockdown. During this time, we must continue maintaining discipline in the way we have been doing till now,” he said during his address to the nation at 10 am.

“Therefore, we have to be very vigilant about hot-spots. We will have to keep a close and strict watch on the places which run the risk of becoming hot-spots. The creation of new hot-spots will further challenge our hard work and penance. Hence, let us extend the strictness and austerity in the fight against Corona for the upcoming one week,” he added.

The lockdown was about to end on April 14.
