Army averts major fire in remote East Sikkim village

Army soldiers averted a major disaster in the remote village of Yak La in East Sikkim district on the night of November 27 when they turned firefighters and doused a huge fire in the dead of the night.

GANGTOK: Army soldiers averted a major disaster in the remote village of Yak La in East Sikkim district on the night of November 27 when they turned firefighters and doused a huge fire in the dead of the night.

After the fire broke out at Yak La around 1:00 am, the Army Camp at Yak La was alerted, and immediately, the troops of the Trishakti Corps rushed to the site of the incident. According to reports, the timely response by the fire fighting party of local Army troopers helped in the containment of the spread of fire.

"The troops without caring for their own safety, quickly formed a human chain from the water point to the incident site, a water bowser was immediately pressed into action along with other firefighting equipment and sand. The fire was contained and not allowed to spread to neighboring houses," stated an Army official.

"In spite of inclement weather, the army soldiers in the finest traditions of the Indian Army worked relentlessly to save human lives and material, and the raging fire was brought under control by around 3:30 am," the official added. (Agencies)
