GANGTOK: The Government of India has approved 40 projects worth Rs. 3,295 crore to develop tourist sites across 23 states.

These projects have been sanctioned under the Scheme of Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India. It provides financial support to states for improving tourism infrastructure and promoting tourism.

Among the beneficiaries is Sikkim, where two projects have been approved: a skywalk at Bhaleydhunga, Yangang, Namchi, and a border experience at Nathu La.

Skywalk at Bhaleydhunga, Yangan, Namchi

The Rs. 97.37 crore project at Bhaleydunga in Yangang, Namchi district, aims to establish Sikkim as a leading ecotourism destination. Namchi, known for its spiritual significance and scenic beauty, and Yangang, nestled at the foothills of Bhaleydhunga Peak near Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary, provide the perfect backdrop for this initiative.

The project features a 240-meter-long circular glass-bottom skywalk at 3,200 meters altitude, with 100 meters extending beyond the cliff, supported by steel girders and cables. Visitors will access the skywalk via a 3.5-kilometer ropeway, and a 100–150-meter funicular will offer a scenic ride through the forest from the ropeway terminal to the skywalk.

Facilities like a medical room, acclimatization hall, and operational offices will be included, ensuring visitor comfort and safety.

Border Experience at Nathu La

The Rs. 68.19 crore project at Nathu La Pass, Sikkim, aims to improve parking and infrastructure to accommodate the increasing number of visitors and military personnel at this significant geopolitical and tourist site, located at 14,140 feet on the India-China border in the eastern Himalayas.

The project will include the construction of parking blocks, a tourist information center, a cafeteria, an infirmary, toilet facilities, walkways, recreational areas, and seating spaces. It will create nearly 1,500 parking spaces, expanding capacity, reducing congestion, and enhancing the visitor experience.
