Footballer Baichung Bhutia Elected As The New President Of HSP

GANGTOK: Baichung Bhutia, the renowned footballer of the nation, was appointed to the position of president of the Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) on Tuesday. 

The party leaders and members elected the 45-year-old former Indian captain without any objection at a national conference held in Gangtok, informed the HSP general secretary Biraj Adhikari. 

The secretary further expressed that the HSP was confident that Bhutia will facilitate a transparent and responsive government to the people upon being elected to power in the future. He said, "The HSP is confident that Bhutia will now carry the mantle of leading the fight to rid Sikkim of the present corrupt misrule and provide a transparent and responsive government to the people if elected to power in the future."

The former Indian footballer asserted that he will be in the service of the people of Sikkim and represent their hopes and aspirations. 

He emphasized that endless opportunities would be facilitated for every Sikkimese to achieve the State's true potential. 

Bhutia said, "We will work tirelessly towards ensuring social equality and justice and create endless opportunities for every Sikkimese to achieve the true potential of our state."

Bhutia also passed on his gratitude to the former minister of HSP, Dr. Bina Basnett. The outgoing minister successfully completed her three-year tenure. She served the HSP since 2018, as the founding president. 

According to reports, the constitution previously declared the term of the president to be annual but later resorted to 5 years. The election of the working president, Baichung Bhutia as the new president comes in as a move aligned with the term duration decided by the constitution. 

The people of Sikkim will surely look forward to the kind of service the former footballer would provide them. 

Baichung Bhutia, the torchbearer of Indian International football is also known as the Sikkimese Sniper, because of his excellent shooting skills in football.
