Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Prohibited from Celebrating Foundation Day in Delhi, Threatens to Hold Rally

When a faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) was barred from celebrating their foundation day at the national capital on Sunday, the leader of the party Binay Tamang turns furious over the issue and alleged the Bharatiya Janata Party as the prime force behind the prohibition of their celebration in Delhi.

Disappointed with the prohibition of GJM celebrations in Delhi, Tamang further warns of bringing out rally in Delhi along with also launching an agitation across the Darjeeling hills. They are threatening to start agitation in the Darjeeling hills in demand of North Bengal region to be included in the scheduled areas until and unless the BJP-led government at the Centre do not give Gorkhaland or accord tribal status to the 11 hill communities.

Speaking from Delhi over the phone, Binay Tamang said, “Ever since I announced to visit Delhi, the BJP, Bimal faction leaders and some activists from the GSS were making plans to stop me from coming here but they were not successful in doing that. They had a programme to show me black flags yesterday at the Delhi airport but could not do so. Not being able to stop us, they even held a meeting at S.S. Ahluwalia’s place yesterday.”

The GJM leader even claims that his party had received the necessary permission from the Delhi police in order to hold the foundation day programme. Despite that, there were repeated attempts of stopping their programme along with the Darjeeling MP S.S. Ahluwalia threatening the programme managers to desist from making speeches against the Centre. Ahluwalia had also warned them of taking action against them if anything said against the ruling party.

Tamang further added, “About 400-500 people were taken out of the auditorium by the police and the gates were locked. They had also told our organizing committee yesterday that if any of our leaders came to the programme then he would be arrested.”

Being vocal about the BJP, Tamang also added that even if they are not allowed to hold the programme, his party will go for it and if they want to put him behind the bars for this, they can definitely do so.
