NORTH SIKKIM: North Sikkim has reached a new milestone in tourism, with a total of 1,989 visitors arriving in the region on Sunday, setting a record for the area despite the harsh weather conditions.

This record-breaking influx comprised 1,776 domestic tourists who obtained online permits. This group consisted of 1,211 males, 568 females, and 137 children, traveling in 312 vehicles, a government statement said. The remaining tourists arrived with offline permits or as international visitors. 52 visitors arrived with offline permits, comprising 40 males, 10 females, and 2 children, using 32 vehicles.

The region also welcomed 21 international tourists, including 11 males, 6 females, and 4 children, who traveled in 5 vehicles, contributing to the unprecedented tourist footfall in North Sikkim.

The continued rise in visitor numbers underscored the region's enduring appeal and the attractions of its other destinations, highlighting North Sikkim's resilience and potential for growth in the tourism sector.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister PS Golay attended the state-level pre-Christmas celebrations titled "Sikkim Rejoice" at the Rangpo playground.

Former MLA Krishna Rai was the special guest for the occasion, besides other dignitaries including Speaker MN Sherpa, Deputy Speaker Raj Kumari Thapa, ministers, MLAs, and representatives from different communities. Religious leaders like Bishop Stephen Lepcha and keynote speaker Dr. Acharya Vikash Massey from Rajasthan joined hands with pastors and church members of Sikkim on a single platform.
