GANKTOK: A bike rally to promote the upcoming Maghe Sankranti Mela 2025 was flagged-off at Jorethang Football Stadium in Sikkim on Friday. The rally was led by Madan Century, MLA of Zoom-Salghari and the Chief Patron of the Maghe Sankranti Mela Committee.

The event witnessed the participation of several key officials, including Yougan Tamang, Press Secretary to the Chief Minister, Monika Rai, SDM of Jorethang, Pavitra Manav, President of NJNP, Dilip Dong, MEO, and Ben Kumar Chettri, CFO. They were joined by members of the Mela Sub-Committees and local residents.

Approximately 65 bikers from Sikkim and neighboring states took part in the rally, which traversed culturally significant locations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Melli before returning to Jorethang. The rally showcased the cultural, historical, and religious importance of the Maghe Sankranti Mela, a festival celebrated for promoting unity and community spirit.

The rally, organized by the Maghe Sankranti Mela Committee, seeks to promote regional tourism and generate enthusiasm for the 2025 edition of the Mela.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, an awareness rally addressing the elimination of gender-based discrimination was organized in Sivasagar under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ scheme. The event was organized by the Women’s Empowerment Center and the District Social Welfare Department in collaboration with the Sivasagar District Administration.

The rally was inaugurated by the District Development Commissioner of Sivasagar, Samiran Bora. Assistant Commissioner and In-charge Social Welfare Officer Barnali Khatiwara, Executive Magistrate Ganesh Baro, District Project Coordinator of the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission, District Child Protection Officer, officials from the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), staff from the District Social Welfare Department, and representatives from the Poshan Abhiyan initiative were also present on the occasion.
