GANGTOK: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has launched a major snow clearance operation in North and East Sikkim after heavy snowfall in the area. The operation is focused on maintaining key strategic routes, including the Lachung-Lachen axis, the highway to Nathu La, and Tamze, to ensure uninterrupted travel.

The severe weather has disrupted daily activities and created challenges for road users. However, a dedicated team from 758 BRTF under Project Swastik has been quickly deployed with heavy machinery to clear the roads.

Despite freezing temperatures, blizzards, and low oxygen levels, the BRO personnel are working relentlessly to keep the vital routes open and ensure the flow of essential goods and services.

Meanwhile, the Sikkim government has begun strictly enforcing the requirement for migrant workers to carry a 'Labour ID Card,' with the deadline for registration and verification ending on Monday. Landlords were also instructed to complete tenant verification by February 10.

The initiative addresses concerns over the influx of migrant workers, with many entering the state for jobs in construction, hospitality, and other sectors. Labour Department Secretary Ragul K stated that the lack of proper police verification could lead to individuals with criminal backgrounds using Sikkim as a hideout.

As per the Sikkim Labour Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service Act (2021), employers must ensure migrant workers undergo police verification before employment.

Failure to comply could result in the detention of unverified workers and legal action against employers. Migrant workers must pay a registration fee of Rs 200 and provide documents like Voter ID, Aadhar Card, and passport photo for the Labour ID Card, valid for a year.
