GANGTOK: A major road accident took place on the Gangtok highway near Ranipool, below the Mayfair area, when a Sikkim Milk Union truck collided with an Eco Van. The truck was heading to Siliguri, while the Eco Van was en route to Gangtok.

Five passengers in the van and the truck driver were injured in the crash, with one passenger reported to be in critical condition. Emergency responders quickly transported all the injured to Manipal Hospital for medical treatment. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, and further details are awaited as the situation unfolds.

Earlier this month, five people lost their lives in a road accident near Lang Khola on the Tashiding-Yuksom road in West Sikkim. The victims, identified as Abhishek Dahal, Abhi Kishore Dahal, Chandra Bahadur Mangar, Karna Bahadur Gurung, and Jeewan Karki, were all residents of the Yuksom-Tashiding constituency. The accident occurred when a 4-wheeler skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge while en route to a wedding.

Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang expressed his sorrow, offering heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families. He prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace and wished strength to the grieving families.

Authorities initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

In a similar tragedy, a road accident in Tadong, Gangtok, on December 29 claimed one life and injured five others when a Mahindra Bolero lost control and crashed into a parked truck.
