Sikkim gears up for World Tourism Day, Tourism festival at Pelling

Pelling is one of the best-kept secrets out of a myriad of travel wonders of Sikkim.

Gangtok: The beautiful northeastern state of Sikkim is all set to celebrate its travel wonders on World Tourism Day this year by organizing a tourism fest at Pelling.

Come September 27 and Pelling, a tiny hamlet in Sikkim which is located at a distance of 135 km from Siliguri will witness the presence of stakeholders of tourism and government officials of Sikkim along with Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for a tourism festival on World Tourism Day.

Pelling is the closest motorable spot from Siliguri where Kanchenjunga can be seen from a close distance.

The festivals which will begin at Pelling from the third week of September will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Chamling on September 27.

Tourism adviser to the Sikkim Government Raj Basu highlighted the major tourist spots of the state like the Kanchenjungha National Park, a world heritage site, old monasteries like Pemayangtse, Dubdi, Sanga Choeling and Tashiding and the famous Khecheopalri Lake, Phutsachu, the only hot spring in the state which are there in the western part of Sikkim and said that the tourism festival aims to promote the tourism potentials of West Sikkim.

Elaborating on the event, Nosang Limbu, an executive committee member of the West Sikkim Tourism Society (WSTS) which is organizing the tourism event said that the event will kick off with mountain biking from Pelling. Along with cycling, participants can also get into other activities like bird watching and butterfly sighting while promoting rural tourism Paragliding and marathon are the other attractions at the event, along with cultural functions. Also, ethnic foods would be available for visitors during the fest.

He also said that travel bloggers will be invited to the event to highlight the region at national and international levels. Homestay tourism, ethnic culture of the state will also be promoted during the fest.

"If the inflow of tourists increase in the region and more and more people come at the homestay accommodations, it would generate employment opportunities for local residents. This would encourage them to explore and create more options for tourists," said Karma Choki Bhutia, vice-president, WSTS.
