GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has issued a notification, asking all the discos and pubs across the state to be shut by 11 PM with growing public safety concerns. This directive, as announced on Saturday, carries stiff warnings of the cancellation of license for any of the establishments flouting the curfew.
The decision comes after a spate of late-night accidents, including fatal ones, which have been attributed to drunk driving. Four police officers were among the victims, which prompted the Chief Minister to take action. CM Tamang said in his statement that the measure is aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of citizens.
"We must enjoy life responsibly and in moderation, balancing modern forms of entertainment with our cultural values," the Chief Minister said.
To ensure the curfew is strictly followed, the Chief Minister has directed the newly appointed Director General of Police (DGP) of the state, IPS Akshay Sachdeva, to strictly enforce the curfew. He also warned that venue owners and law enforcement officers who fail to comply with the directive would be dealt with severely.
He also thanked outgoing DGP AK Singh for his services during his tenure, as he helped in maintaining law and order.
The order is intended to promote public safety and minimize late-night mishaps while keeping modern entertainment in Sikkim under disciplined control. The curfew will be enforced by the authorities immediately.
