GANGTOK: Sikkim's Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba has advocated for the inclusion of skill development in Indian education, which he said was an imperative requirement to help increase demand for a qualified workforce.
During a recently concluded Parliament session, Subba raised the urgent need to bring education in line with the fast-changing economic landscape driven by rapid technological changes.
Subba mentioned that the education structure in India has not changed over the decades. He underlined the incorporation of skill-based courses to be introduced into the curricula, which would empower people and enhance employability, allowing the workforce to deal with the dynamism of a global economy in all its challenges.
The MP’s appeal aligns with the government’s Skill India initiative, which aims to promote vocational training and equip the youth with industry-relevant skills. Subba also tied his vision to the broader objectives of creating a progressive India (#VikshitBharat) and fostering development in Sikkim (#VikshitSikkim).
A first-term MP who assumed office on June 9, 2024, Subba has actively participated in parliamentary proceedings, maintaining an attendance record of 89%. His focus on education reform underscores his commitment to addressing key developmental challenges.
Subba’s remarks come at a time when skill development is recognized as a cornerstone for human development and inclusive growth. By advocating curriculum reforms, he aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and the demands of modern industries, paving the way for a more adaptive and resilient workforce.
