GANGTOK: Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim Dr. Indra Hang Subba is stepping up efforts to protect the Himalayan region from the growing threats of climate change, particularly the dangers posed by Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
In a written query to the Ministry, Dr. Subba inquired about the details of the funds allocated for studying the effects of climate change in the Himalayas. He also sought specific financial support for Sikkim to help the state deal with the devastating floods in the Teesta Basin, which have been aggravated by climate change.
In response, the ministry outlined several ongoing efforts:
1. Funds are being allocated through various ministries to examine climate change impacts in the Himalayan region.
2. The Department of Science & Technology is leading the National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE) under the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
3. The Ministry of Earth Sciences is studying glacial melt and water sustainability under its Polar and Cryosphere Research (PACER) sub-scheme.
4. The G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment is exploring biodiversity changes, glacial risks, and other climate-related issues.
5. Disaster Mitigation Funds: Sikkim has received Rs. 40 crore under the National Disaster Mitigation Fund to tackle GLOF risks.
Dr. Subba stated, "As studies progress and more data is gathered, I trust the central government will continue to recalibrate its policies and strategies to tackle the climate challenges facing the region, including Sikkim."
In October 2024, the state established a 13-member commission to identify at-risk glacial lakes and develop strategies to prevent future disasters. Dr. Subba emphasized that collaboration between state and central governments is key to safeguarding the region’s communities and ecosystems for generations to come.
