
GANGTOK: A significant review meeting was held on Thursday, February 27, at the Tashiling Secretariat to evaluate the ongoing progress of the Sevoke-Rangpo Railway Project (SRRP). The meeting was chaired by Chief Secretary R. Telang (IAS) and attended by senior officials from various state government departments and representatives from the North East Frontier Railway (NFR), including Hitendra Goyal, CAO/NFR, and Renya Eta, CGM (IRCON).
The meeting focused on key aspects of the project, including infrastructure development, project timelines, and the challenges encountered during execution. Officials provided an update on the 45-km railway line from Sevoke to Rangpo, which has made over 70% physical progress.
The line, which would carry both passenger and freight trains, is expected to be completed by December 2027, considerably enhancing regional connections. One of the significant accomplishments of the project includes the completion of the Sevoke station yard, while a world-class railway station is planned for Rangpo.
In addition, the future phases of the project were discussed. Phase 2 will extend the railway line from Rangpo to Gangtok, which is expected to improve accessibility to the Sikkim capital. Phase 3, which proposes an extension to Nathula, was also highlighted as a strategically important development. Chief Secretary R. Telang stressed the project’s importance in enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating economic growth in the state.
