Sikkim signs MoU with Microsoft for digital learning

Guwahati: To improve the education system in the state of Sikkim, Microsoft has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sikkim government on January 31.

The MoU signed between the state Human Resource Department and the software giant's subsidiary in India aims to boost digital literacy and new age technology knowledge in students and teachers of government schools. Signing the MoU, State HRD Minister RB Subba said that the collaboration between the two was part of the state's commitment to make use of technology to revamp its core sectors including e-governance.

Managing Director of Microsoft India, Manish Prakash said that the e-governance was the best way to provide technological benefits to all the residents of North East India.

Prakash further stated that the next step of growth will be to leverage the power of the cloud, artificial intelligence and are very keen to be a partner with the Northeastern region on this journey.

The software company will aid Sikkim in integrating IT courseware into the state curriculum from class VI to class X and produce 100 master trainers at the State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) labs on IT curriculum.

To implement the plan and build student-teacher capacity in digital skills, enhance digital literacy and digital citizenship, Microsoft will adopt two schools.

The teachers and students will be trained on Microsoft's curriculum on creative coding and gaming through apps, robotics, entrepreneurship and tools for collaboration, creativity and communication.

The training will be imparted through workshops at these schools as well as online webinars to equip them with technology skills to counter real-life challenges.

Microsoft has also been working with several Indian state governments' to support their digital infrastructure, enhance their citizen services and make their administrative and governance operations much more efficient.
