GANGTOK: Prem Singh Tamang, the chief minister of Sikkim, declared on January 12 that employees of the state government who are employed on an ad hoc, MR, or contractual basis, including probationary teachers, will also be entitled to a 365-day maternity vacation.

In a post on social media, he stated, "At the start of the New Year 2023, I am delighted to declare that the employees under the Government of Sikkim working on an ad hoc, contractual, and MR basis, including probationary teachers, will also be eligible for maternity leave of 365 days (for female employees) and paternity leave of 30 days, at par with the other regular employees in this regard.

Notably, temporary employees were not mentioned in the most recent notification, which sparked anger over the decision to give only regular staff leverage.

However, according to the most recent announcement, the state administration permitted all workers to work on an ad hoc, contractual, and MR basis.

A notification dated January 13, 2022, stated that "the state government is pleased to grant maternity leave not exceeding 365 (three hundred and sixty-five) days to temporary employees drawing wages/consolidated pay from the Consolidated Fund of the State Government viz. Work-charged/Muster Roll/Adhoc/Consolidated Pay/Co-Terminus basis etc. including Probationary Teachers of Education Department with effect from the date of its commencement."

The letter further stated that the state government is happy to offer paternity leaves of up to 30 days to male public employees who work in temporary facilities and get wages or combined pay from the state government's general fund, i.e. The notification further stated that starting from the date of his wife's confinement,

''Work-charged/Muster Roll/Adhoc/Consolidated Pay/Co-Terminus basis etc. including Probationary Teachers of Education Department from the date of confinement of his wife,'' added the notification. According to the statement, the duration of maternity or paternity leave must never, under any circumstances, exceed the duration of the temporary worker's appointment before it is considered admissible.
