Six-year-old girl gang-raped and murdered in Udalguri; two detained so far

GUWAHATI: In another horrendous incident in the state, a 6-year-old girl was gang-raped and murdered in Bholatar, Udalguri near the Indo-Bhutan border.

The girl had gone missing since the night of 26 January. Her dead body was recovered from a nearby forest on Monday morning

Two men, Santosh Tati and Roshan Mundak, have been detained under suspicion. The case is currently under investigation.

According to a report, under the IPC and the Special & Local Laws, a total of 23,082 cases of crimes against women were reported in Assam in 2017, a slight increase from 20,869 reported cases in 2016.

Arunachal Pradesh came second after Assam with 17,909 cases of crimes against women

The number of cases registered in Nagaland was zero after the 2015 rape case where the rape suspect was lynched by a mob.

Assam recorded 6.4 percent of all-India cases of crime against women. Tripura stood at 0.3 percent whereas Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Mizoram stood at 0.1 percent each. The rest of the Northeast is in a good position with an insignificant contribution to the national total.
