Study Reveals High Ratio Of Women Workers In Managerial Posts In Northeast

New Delhi: The annual bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) has recorded a high ratio of female workers in managerial posts in northeast India. According to the bulletin, Meghalaya has topped the chart after recording 34.15% of women workers in managerial posts. Sikkim has ranked second and Mizoram has claimed the third position.

The ratio of female workers in managerial posts at the all-India level is comparatively much lower, recording a total of 18.7% only. 

In the category of legislators, senior officials and managers in the north-eastern states of India, Manipur has topped the PLFS list by recording 51.8% of women in this category. The percentage recorded in Meghalaya was 51.7% followed by Sikkim with a percentage of 50.4%. However, Assam ranked low in by recording only 6.2% of women in this category.

The percentage of women in this category at the all-India level recorded a disappointing 23.2%.

Among the states with the highest ratio of females to males among professional and technical workers, Sikkim had topped the list with a percentage of 120.2% , while Meghalaya came in second with 101.5% and Kerela came in third with 91.6%.

Assam recorded 52.9% female workers in this category while Manipur recorded 85.2% female workers in the same.

The group chief economic adviser at the State Bank of India, Soumya Kanti Ghosh said, "Women in India still have large ground to cover in order to break the glass ceiling as they occupy only 18.8% of the senior- and middle- management positions at the all-India level. Manipur and Meghalaya ranked first among the states at 34.1% women occupying senior- and middle- management positions."
