PM Narendra Modi later clarified that he is not going to give up his social media accounts.

Instead on March 8, on the occasion of Women’s Day, he is going to give away his social media accounts to inspiring women.

Twitter spats between politicians and well-known personalities have become increasingly common in India.

War of words ensued between AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and BJP’s Smriti Irani after Kejriwal posted a tweet which Irani deemed anti-women.

Kejriwal had tweeted, “Please go out and vote today. I specially appeal to the women that just as you uphold responsibilities of your house, you also have to shoulder responsibilities of the country and Delhi. The women must go out and vote and please take the men in your house alongwith you to vote. Please do discuss with men whom it would be better to vote for.”

Irani retorted by tweeted, “Do you not consider women capable enough to decide for themselves who to vote for?”

Kejriwal did not let it go, so he tweeted, “ Smriti ji, the women of Delhi have decided who to vote for. And this time in Delhi, women have decided on behalf of their family. After all they have to take care of their homes.”

A Twitter spat between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Historian Ramachandra Guha started when the former sent out a tweet after attending a launch event of Narayani Basu’s biography VP Menon : The Unsung Architect of Modern India on Wednesday.

The tweet reads, “Learnt from the book that Nehru did not want Patel in the Cabinet in 1947 and omitted him from the initial Cabinet list. Clearly, a subject for much debate. Noted that the author stood her ground on this revelation.”

Guha retorted to this tweet with another tweet which read, “This is a myth, that has been comprehensively demolished by Professor Srinath Raghavan in The Print. Besides, promoting fake news about, and false rivalries between, the builders of modern India is not the job of the Foreign Minister. He should leave this to the BJP’s IT Cell.” Jaishankar could not let it go, so he gave a tongue-in-cheek reply through his tweet which goes, “Some Foreign Ministers do read books. May be a good habit for some Professors too. In that case, strongly recommend the one I released.”

Guha then sent out more tweets in response to this. In one of them, he shared the letter of 1 August where Nehru invites Patel to join the first Cabinet of free India, calling him the “strongest pillar” of that Cabinet.
