BAC chairman nomination: Rift between BJP, IPFT

Agartala, May 13: The differences between the two parties of the ruling alliance – BJP and IPFT – have taken an ugly turn once again following the declaration of the names for the post of chairman of the Block Advisory Committee (BAC).

In some places, the irate workers of both the parties forced to shut down the shops to express their anger, affecting vehicular movements in some places.

A tense situation has been reported at Gandachera sub-division of Dhalai district and Tulasikhar block of Khowai district.

In both the blocks, the IPFT members were nominated for the post of chairman. However, the BJP supporters were protesting against the nomination of candidates from its alliance party.

The BJP has a strong hold at Gandachera. However, the post for the chairman of BAC from both the blocks under the Gandachea and Ganga Nagar sub-divisions went in favour of the IPFT.

Opposing the nomination of IPFT leader for the post of BAC chairman, the BJP supporters rushed to the Gandachera market and forced the traders to shut down the shops. They also started road blockade in different parts.

In Tulasikhar block, the BJP workers protested against the nomination of an IPFT leader as chairman of the BAC. They even ransacked one of their own party offices and gheraoed some of the leaders for their failure to nominate their own man. The situation was so tense that police had to intervene to restore peace.

Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarma on Friday announced the names of those to be nominated as chairman of the Block Advisory Committees to run the day to day activities of the block.

It became necessary to nominate BAC chairman as all the elected chairman belonging to CPI (M) resigned or stopped attending office since the BJP-IPFT government came into power, causing a problem in the functioning of the blocks.
