Agartala: On Tuesday, a group of cross-border smugglers attempted to attack Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on duty near the India-Bangladesh border in northern Tripura’s Unakoti district.
The smugglers also tried to snatch the jawans’ weapons but were thwarted by the alert BSF team. The situation was further controlled with assistance from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), who supported the Indian forces in dispersing the smugglers.
The incident occurred near the Magroli gram panchayat when a group of 15-20 Bangladeshi smugglers was intercepted while attempting to smuggle contraband items. When challenged, the smugglers retaliated with sharp weapons and tried to overpower the jawans.
Amidst the commotion, BGB personnel arrived near the border fence and worked alongside the BSF to disperse the smugglers. Additional BSF reinforcements reached the spot, forcing the smugglers to flee. Both the BSF and BGB showed restraint by refraining from using firearms during the confrontation.
Tripura shares an 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, much of which remains unfenced due to land disputes and demarcation issues.
The region has seen an increase in smuggling and infiltration attempts since unrest began in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government in August 2024.
The BSF has significantly intensified its vigilance along the border to prevent cross-border crimes, including smuggling, infiltration, and exfiltration. In recent months, the BSF has foiled numerous infiltration attempts by Bangladeshi nationals, comprising both Hindus and Muslims.
This collaborative effort between the BSF and BGB highlights the ongoing challenges of securing the porous India-Bangladesh border while managing trans-border issues effectively.
