Concern Over National Register of Citizens (NRC) Increases in Tripura

A Correspondent

Agartala: The National Register of Citizens (NRC) won’t have any direct impact in Tripura but peoples’ concern over the possible outcome is increasing as the date for final publication on August 31 is drawing closer.

In the last half a century, many people who crossed over to Tripura following partition had migrated to Assam in search of jobs or business. Moreover, many girls from Tripura settled in Assam through marriage.

It is learnt that many of these people had received notice from the NRC authority and had submitted supporting papers but not sure if these were accepted.

The concern is more visible in North Tripura district bordering Assam as maximum number of population exchange had taken place with this district due to its close proximity to Assam. A local resident said at that time, people moved freely and never cared for papers.
