Congress Discloses First List of 17 Contestants' Names ahead of Tripura Assembly Polls

NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress (INC) on Saturday declared the first list of 17 candidates for the Tripura Assembly election, inclusive of Agartala's MLA Sudip Roy Barman, Prasanta Sen Choudhury from Mohanpur, and Birajit Sinha from the Kailashahar receiving a ticket from the party scheduled on February 16.

Out of the 17 candidates, five turn out to be either from a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe while one candidate of the 17 is a woman, Rubi Gope, participating from the Kamalpur constituency.

Prior to this, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) had also released the roll of candidates for the state assembly elections. CPI(M) MLA Mobossar Ali, who joined hands with BJP the previous day, will contest from the Kailasahar constituency. As per reports, out of the 48 candidates, 11 are women including Union Minister of State for Social Justice Pratima Bhoumik.

Earlier on January 26, The Indian National Congress unveiled the initial list of 55 candidates for the Meghalaya Assembly elections arranged on February 27. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in-charge Mukul Wasnik released the names of the 55 candidates in New Delhi. As per the list, state Congress President and Lok Sabha MP from the Shillong parliamentary constituency, Vincent H. Pala, will be taking part from the Sutnga Saipung Assembly constituency.

In the previous assembly election in 2018, the BJP for the time had created a government in Tripura. The CPI(M) had earlier ruled the northeastern state of Meghalaya for 25 years.
