AGARTALA: The top two officials of Tripura's border Sepahijala district on Tuesday tested positive for COVID-19, officials said.

Health officials said that District Magistrate Chandra Kumar Jamatia, and Superintendent of Police Krishnendu Chakraborty have tested positive.

"At least 50 contacts of the DM and the SP are likely to be infected. Efforts are on to test the samples of the suspected and contact persons," a health official told IANS.

A State government official said that other officials would be appointed during the treatment of the infected officials. In Tripura, eight more persons lost their lives due to COVID-19 during the past 24 hours at the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital, taking the death toll to 21. So far, the State has registered 4,288 positive cases, while 2,467 have recovered from the disease and 18 patients migrated to other States.

Of the total cases including doctors, officials and police personnel, Sepahijala topped among the eight districts in Tripura with 1,028 COVID-19 cases and two deaths. (IANS)
