Drive against smuggling from reang refugee camp, one held in North Tripura District

Agartala: One person was arrested for smuggling a huge quantity of rice out of Reang refugee camps in North Tripura district.

Sub-divisional Magistrate Chandni Chandran herself led one raid on Monday and found five quintal rice stored in a place near the Naisinghpara camp. In another incident, the police recovered fifteen quintal rice while being smuggled from the Nabajoypara refugee camp and arrested one Banajoy Reang (30).

It is learned that rice allotted to Reang refugees are being smuggled for quite a long time and recently Chandran took an initiative to stop the practice and unearthed two cases in the process. In both, the police have registered cases.

It is learned that the smuggling of ration items are going on in connivance of a section of refugee leaders and the government employees deployed for ration management in the camps.

As per records, there are over 36,000 refugees in the four camps but the fact remains that a good number of them never reside in the camps. Many of them are permanently settled in Assam or Mizoram but their names are still in the refugee camps. The rations allotted for these absentee refugees are being smuggled out in the open market.
