Agartala: Mechanized lifting of sand from various rivers and cherras in North Tripura district is rampant despite a Supreme Court verdict banning such activities. It is learned that a section of Forest officials is conniving with a gang that is involved in this illegal business.

It is learned that lifting of sand using machines is a common sight in the rivers and cherras like Manu, Deo and Kanchan Cherra, Fatik Cherra, Ganga Cherra, etc. Forest officials are aware of everything but no action is being taken to stop this illegal practice.

Mechanized lifting of sand started during the previous Left Front government but they never bothered to stop this illegal business. It was stopped for sometime after the new government came into power but it again resumed.
