Major attempt to grab Tripura forest land foiled

AGARTALA: The incident of sudden arrival of a few hundred people from Arunachal Pradesh and their attempt to set up a colony at East Shantipur of Kanchanpur Sub-division cutting several hundreds of trees has taken a new turn as the report unveils a massive land grabbing plot.

The sudden incident had initially confused the sub-divisional administration but what revealed in subsequent investigation is more stunning. It revealed a close connection of some government employees with the entire plot.

Avedananda Baidya, sub-divisional magistrate admitted to the reporters that there are allegations of involvement of some government employees. Local people have identified them and an investigation is initiated to find out the truth.

A three-member committee led by Deputy Collector Animesh Debbarma has been asked to investigate the allegation and to submit their report within seven days. SDM said if any link is found the government officials will face serious action.

It may be mentioned that some people from Arunachal Pradesh has arrived at Shantipur area a few days back and before the local administration could understand anything they destroyed several hundreds of trees and started construction of houses.

The administration acted only after the local people brought it to the notice of the authority. It is learnt that following administrative action some of the people returned but some are still residing in the locality.
