AGARTALA: Yet another major boost awaits Tripura's tea industry. The north eastern state is all set to get a tea auction centre soon in the capital city of Agartala.

The long pending proposal received formal approval at a meeting in Agartala by the state government and and the Tea Board of India. Both sides agreed to set up the tea auction centre in Agartala.

TTDC officials along with many prominent tea sellers from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati also attended the meeting who equally welcomed the decision.

State secretary of commerce and industry Abhishek Chandra promised full support for the venture saying that it would be a big push for the entire industry.

The participants further discussed in detail the e-auction, e-procurement, e-marketplace and e-selling of tea in the state.

Tripura Tea Board chairman Santosh Saha called it a major boost for the state's tea sector. The speakers in the meeting heaped huge praise on the quality of tea in the state and urged the stakeholders to improve it further in view of the growing demand in the market.

Tea Board of India's Controller of Licensing Rajanigandha Sil Naskar gave a detailed presentation of the tea industry through in the state.

Tea Board of India's Executive Director and North East regional office- Arunita Phukan Yadav, Deputy Director Kamala Chandra Baishya and other officials were prominent among those who attended the meeting.

Currently, Tripura tea planters send their finished products to either Guwahati or Kolkata auction centre to sell their product pushing the cost of tea.

Tripura produces 9-10 lakh kg tea in a year---10% of the country's total production and it is the fifth state in terms of tea production in the country.
