NIA To Initiate Probe Into Ambush On BSF Patrol In Tripura

AGARTALA: Two people were killed in an ambush on a Border Security Force (BSF) patrol in Tripura in August 2022, that was led by a commander of the ban NLFT.

On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) assumed control of the investigation.

On August 19 in north Tripura, the terrorists attacked a BSF patrolling group from the Bangladeshi side of the border before escaping deep inside the neighbouring country's forest.

According to an official, the ministry of home affairs (MHA) recently requested that the NIA look into the ambush since it had connections to other countries.

The federal anti-terror probe agency has named a senior military commander of the outlawed group NLFT, 2nd Lieutenant Bikram Bahadur Jamatia alias Milan, as well as six other people, including Sergeant Chtrabanga Jamatia, Warrant Officer Ramnai Kolia, Sergeants Rangia Reanga and Kawla Kaipeng, and two others, in its first information report (FIR) submitted on February 20.

Four bullet wounds were sustained by BSF head constable Girish Kumar during the event, and he later passed away in a hospital.

The NLFT militants under the command of Bikram Bahadur Jamatia carried out this attack. Also, the residents of Rammuni Para and Mritujoy Para assisted them (near the border). According to the NIA FIR, the militants shot six to eight bullets, and five members of the BSF party responded by firing 35 rounds.

In order to take action against extremists, the border guarding force increased security in the area and also requested help from Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

The Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), which outlawed NLFT in 1997, states that its current headquarters are in Bangladesh. NLFT primarily operates in north Tripura.

According to officials, the NIA will probably contact the Bangladeshi government to ask for details on the attack's perpetrators and cadres.
