Pineapple festival comes to close

Agartala, July 3 : The two-day Pine Apple festival organized by the Agriculture Department, Government of Tripura at Kolkata ended with much enthusiasm as large number of people turned up to enjoy the tasty fruit.

The festival remained open from 4 to 8 pm on June 30 and July 1 where many Kolkata local enquired about the origin of the fruit, its availability and the season.

Minister for Agriculture Pranajit Singha Roy, who was present in the festival said the season for Queen Variety of Pineapple ends by June. So this time sufficient fruit could not be brought here.

Singha Roy said steps are being taken so that from next year large quantity of Pineapples could be marketed in Kolkata and other major cities of the country. Senior officials of the Agriculture and Horticulture department also were present.

This year a good quantity of ‘Queen Variety Pineapples’ were exported to Dubai. Agriculture minister said the Pine apple growers in the State are happy as they got good price for their product and it is expected that more farmers will be interested to grow pineapple next year.

The minister said state agriculture department is taking special initiative to revive the glory of the Oranges grown in Jampui Hills in northern Tripura bordering Mizoram.

Not long ago the oranges of Jampui Hills used to dominate the markets throughout eastern India but the production has declined for not taking proper care to maintain the quality of the soil. Agriculture scientists have been asked to start research and to recommend measures to protest the soil quality, the minister said.
