Agartala: The State level Orange Festival of Tripura is going to be celebrated this time at Killa block under Udaipur sub-division of Gumoti district which is gradually replacing Jampui Hills as the orange headquarters of Tripura.

The three-day festival will be inaugurated by the Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Debbarman at Tuibaklai JB School ground on November 12.

Rampada Jamatia, president to the preparatory committee for the festival told reporters that there will be a orange show and orange selling centre in the festival.

In addition to that, there will be cultural programmes to represent various communities.

There was a time when Jampui Hills, bordering Mizoram in North Tripura district, were known as the only orange producing area of the State. But in last few years, orange is being cultivated in new areas and also getting a good yield. Baramura ADC village this time witnessed a bumper production of orange and the farmers are a happy lot.

Rang Koloi, one of the orange farmers of the area said they mainly market their produce at Udaipur market and said this time they have got a good price during Laxmi Puja and Kali Puja. At least eighty families in the village are fully dependent on orange cultivation and after seeing their achievement, many more are getting interested to start orange cultivation. It is expected that in coming days, the adjoining villages too will adopt orange cultivation.

The State Government is also encouraging the rural people to take up orange cultivation as the fruit is having huge demand in the State as well as in outside markets. Apart from Baramura ADC village, many other new areas like the hills of Sakhan and Shermun in North Tripura district, people are cultivating orange and finding it a profitable one.
