Students-Teachers from Odisha Alleges Local Students of Torture in Tripura Sanskrit University

In a recent incident taking place in Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan University, Tripura, students and teachers who have come to study Sanskrit in the university from Odisha alleges the local students of torture and harassment and begs to be rescued from this state. This shocking allegation made by the students and teachers of Odisha has compelled the Odisha government to dispatch a high-level team to Tripura for further assessments and investigations.

Notably, there are about 90 students from Odisha who are presently enrolled in the Agartala campus Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan University in various degree programmes. The students are enrolled in various courses like Bachelor in Education (B.Ed) and others.

It all came into light when a video clip was released on social media late Wednesday night, wherein Odiya students in the university are seen weeping and pleading for help. One of the female students is seen saying “There is great injustice here and we are totally unsafe. We are B.Ed students and have come to this Central Government affiliated university after passing an entrance examination. But local students harass and thrash us”.

However, not only female students, the male students too raised similar complains. A male student said in the video while weeping with folded hands, “They thrashed both male and female students. We may be killed at any moment. We don’t need the B.Ed (degrees) or jobs. We only want security”.

The students are seen to have appealed the Odisha government to rescue them from the university and take them back to their homes safely. Secretary of Odisha’s Higher Education Department, Bishnupada Sethi, immediately after this incident, said, “A two-member team, comprising Vice Chancellor of Shri Jagannath Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya Radha Madhab Dash and Director Higher Education IAS B Parmeswaran, will be visiting Agartala to sort out the matter.”

Giving his reaction to the issue, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tweeted, “Students from Odisha are Tripura’s children too. No anti-social activities shall be allowed on the land of Ma Tripursundari. I assure full protection for students from across India in #Tripura. Spoke to @dpradhanbjp ji today. Assured him of full safety for #Odisha students.”
