Tripura all set to usher in dairy revolution

A Correspondent

Agartala: In an effort to make Tripura self-sufficient in milk production, the State Government is proposing the setting up of dairies in different parts of the State. The first of such a modern dairy is proposed at Jolaibari in the South Tripura district which is centrally located in a milk-producing zone. Few more dairies are also likely to come in other districts of the State.

MLA Shankar Roy has taken a special initiative in this regard and has already had discussion with the authorities of NABARD and the Gramin Bank regarding funding the project that may need an investment of Rs 7 to 8 crore. The initiative got momentum after Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb recently announced his government’s determination of making the State self-sufficient in milk production.

Roy said Jolaibari is being considered due to its locational advantages and communication facilities. It is located in the middle of several milk producing zones like Belonia, Hrishyamukh, Sabroom, Shantir Bazar and Karbook and is on the newly-built national highway.

He said large number of people are rearing cattle in these places but not getting proper price for their product. If the dairy starts functioning, these people will get remunerative price of their product and many others will also be encouraged in cattle farming.

An added advantage of the area is availability of several wetlands around where cultivation of green fodder will be easy and that will help in rearing cattle.
