Agartala: All students who have passed the Class 12 state board examination in Tripura this year will be admitted to government degree colleges, Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman announced on Saturday.
The assurance comes amid recent protests over undergraduate admissions at Ramthakur Degree College in Agartala. A professor there was suspended for allegedly admitting more than 100 students illegally by forging the principal’s signature.
“I assure the students who have cleared the higher secondary examination that they will get admission in government degree colleges, though the subjects and colleges may not be of their choice,” Barman said. He noted that over 24,000 students passed the Class 12 exams this year, while the state has around 33,000 seats available.
The minister said he has instructed principals of degree colleges in Agartala to create more seats to accommodate students.
Responding to the Ramthakur College incident, Barman said, “The department has nothing to do with what had happened outside the campus.”
Principal Papri Das Sengupta told reporters that the college had already admitted more students than its capacity. “We can’t allow more admissions. All admissions were done purely on merit through an online portal,” she said.
