AGARTALA: After nearly two months of suspension, the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, has announced the resumption of visa and consular services from February 5.
The operations were halted on December 3, a day after a group of protesters forcibly entered the mission's premises, citing concerns over the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Dhaka.
In a note released on Tuesday, Md. Al Amin, First Secretary of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission, affirmed the decision, saying, "All visa and consular services of the Bangladesh Asst. High Commission will resume on February 5."
For many enterprises and travellers who depend on these services for cross-border mobility, this announcement is a relief. There were important diplomatic responses to the mission's security violation.
The demonstrators broke through security barriers, destroyed property, and took down the Bangladeshi flag. Indian authorities responded quickly, suspending three police officers assigned to the Commission's grounds and apprehending seven of the incident's participants.
Following the attack, Bangladesh summoned Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Dhaka to express its concerns. Simultaneously, the Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala, Arif Mahamad, was called to Dhaka for consultations but has since returned to Agartala to oversee the resumption of operations.
