Agartala: The civic body polls of Tripura has been postponed till February 27. The same was informed by a notification issued by the secretary of the state urban development department, Kiren Gitte.

Gitte has also ordered the appointment of administrators to the urban local bodies, from the date of dissolution of these bodies. Most of the civic bodies in Tripura will end their tenure in December.

The 20 urban local bodies consist of one Agartala municipal corporation, six Nagar panchayats and 13 municipal councils.

The charge of the administrator of Agartala Municipal Corporation will be taken by the West district magistrate. On the other hand, the sub-divisional magistrates will look after their respective local bodies in the state.

The state elections commission has delayed the general elections of the municipalities of Tripura till February 27, said the notification.

Senior CPIM leader, Pabitra Kar reacted on the postponement of polls saying that polls are being announced in all the states, however, Tripura is not taking any positive step on the same. He further said that the BJP government has lost its roots in Tripura, and are afraid to conduct the polls.

The West Bengal government too postponed its elections. But the High Court interfered and further ordered the state to announce the dates for local body elections, added Kar. He called this as Tripura government's "irrational and undemocratic move."

Apart from Kar, Pijush Kanti Biswas of Pradesh Congress also reacted on the postponement of the polls. He has threatened the government of moving to the High Court if poll dates are not announced immediately.

The BJP state spokesperson, Nabendu Bhattacharjee said that the polls were deferred after the state election commission observed the current situation of the state.
