
AGARTALA: The Unakoti District Court sentenced three individuals to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of a man in Jubarajnagar, Tripura. On January 21, 2025, the District and Sessions Judge in Kailasahar convicted the accused—Jamir Ali (35), Sahin Ali (25), and Hossain Ali (26).
In addition to their sentences, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 on each of the accused, with an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.
As per a press release from the Tripura Police stated that the incident occurred on April 28, 2019, when the three accused attacked Mohammed Ali, the brother of the complainant, at the Jubarajnagar Panchayat office complex in Unakoti District. The attack, driven by prior enmity, involved the use of a knife, inflicting severe neck injuries that rendered the victim unconscious at the scene.
Despite the efforts of the complainant and others to rush Ali to Bhagabannagar District Hospital in Kailashahar and was declared dead on arrival by the attending doctors. The case was thoroughly investigated by Inspector Chaitanya Reang of Irani Police Station, who submitted a detailed charge sheet that ultimately led to the conviction of the accused.
Meanwhile, Kolkata court imposed life imprisonment on Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a 34-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on Roy. Justice Anirban Das ruled that the case did not meet the criteria for the death penalty, stating it was not among the "rarest of the rare" cases.
The court also directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs 17 lakh to the parents of the victim, who, while sitting in the courtroom, said they had wanted justice rather than compensation.
