AGARTALA: Disarmed former members of the disbanded militant outfit All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) demanded permanent rehabilitation in RK Nagar, a locality along the outskirts of Tripura's biggest industrial area.
Sources have informed that the land of around 100 Kanis has been taken over, and small huts are being made as the surrendered militants start to settle down.
Last Tuesday, Tipra Motha Party MLA and erstwhile ATTF chief Ranjit Debbarma went to visit the site and gauge the resumption of the resettlement work. Addressing the media at Kokborok, Debbarma said the land had lain empty since 1980. He added further that the erection of houses began on March 29, just as per the agreement between the surrendered militants and the Government of India.
But he refused to confirm if the Tripura government has officially approved the rehabilitation scheme. Debbarma pointed out that the location near the industrial estate can prove to be an advantage, providing jobs to the rehabilitated people.
For a systematic approach, he asked the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to constitute a panel to monitor the process of rehabilitation. In the meantime, proper communication with the District Magistrate on the issue is continuing.
The land is empty and uninhabited. It is not being cultivated or used for anything else. If the surrendered cadres are provided this land, they will have an opportunity to lead a good life," Debbarma, once a rebel leader, now a legislator, said.
Upon contact, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar assured that the officials are preparing a proposal for land allotment for the surrendered militants.
