GUWAHATI: In a landmark achievement for regional connectivity, the first-ever goods train has reached Tripura's Nischintapur Terminal from Tetelia in Assam under the Agartala-Akhaura rail link project, an official of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed on Tuesday.

The historic moment was followed by the arrival of 11 wagons carrying cement from Tetelia near Guwahati, further bolstering freight operations in the area. "The delivery of this consignment at Nischintapur Terminal marks a milestone towards the commissioning of the Agartala-Akhaura new rail link project," the NFR said.

This feat comes on the heels of the clearing of the Agartala-Nischintapur section for carrying goods by Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, NFR General Manager, following smooth joint inspections by top railway authorities. The commencement of this terminal for freight is likely to reduce the load on heavily loaded goods sheds such as Jirania and other major locations in the Lumding Division by providing a different route for the movement of cargo.

Based on NFR, the project will improve the efficiency of logistics, simplify transportation of goods, and lower transit time considerably. Furthermore, it will be instrumental in increasing regional economic growth through improvement in railway infrastructure and enhancement in trade opportunities.

The Nischintapur Terminal, lying strategically close to the India-Bangladesh border, will become a key cross-border trade hub and regional economic integration center. The enhanced railway connectivity is likely to benefit Tripura businesses and the neighboring northeastern states by easing their traffic flow with a more efficient transportation system.

Although the Nischintapur terminal track connecting to Akhaura in Bangladesh has been completed, train operations have been held up owing to prevailing conditions in Bangladesh. Nevertheless, NFR is committed to improving railway connectivity in the region for long-term economic returns.
